FLOORING UPDATE

Well wonders never cease.  I had two different floor installers come to the house last Friday to give quotes on wall to wall sisal/seagrass/jute for the den/bar area. BOTH of them said I shouldn't do it.  They said natural fibers are not meant to be installed wall to wall.  They do not seam well.  You would see the seams and over time they would start fraying.  They also explained issues with cleaning, staining, shedding, etc... The list went on and on.  I've never had an experience where a business let alone two, didn't want to take my money.  So with that said, they convinced me that wall to wall natural fiber was not the way to go.

This leaves the following options:
  • Cement floor painted in the hexagonal pattern; or
  • A poured Terrazzo floor IF I can find someone locally that does that work (I've heard it is a dying art)
I think I'm leaning towards the Terrazzo option if I can find the right contractor b/c of it's classic look and durability.  See all the inspiration shots below and give me your thoughts.

Examples of poured Terrazzo; very common in mid-century homes.

This would be my vibe if I go with Terrazzo (layered rugs)

  1. Are you kidding? I would die for a terrazzo floor. I love them. If you get one, look at the ones with the sparkle of colored glass in them.

  2. I would have never thought terrazzo floor to be honest. My immediate thought was the ugly, dingy floors of old schools. But these inspiration pics have made me a true believer! I say go terrazzo! So unique and I agree with Linda about the sparklies!

  3. This is a tough one. My Catholic church growing up had terrazzo floors so it always has a religious significance to me. I know, weird. It would be in keeping with the feel/period of your house though. And I fear you might tire of looking at a painted pattern on your floor. Hmm.

  4. thought about cement tiles? You can have almost any color or pattern.
Classic, or mod. Check out Villa Lagoon Tiles, or Popham design. I love mine.

  5. Wow, both of these choices are gorgeous! I am of no help because I love them both. If I had to choose right now I would say the poured terrazzo floors but the painted floor in the first picture is just beautiful as well! No matter which one you choose it is going to look great!

  7. The commercial industry still does Terrazzo. Maybe go that route, if you haven't already.
