AN ICONIC CHOICE.....MAYBE???

Martinique Wallpaper

As I still struggle with the wallpaper choice for the laundry room, I came across some interesting information about Martinique Wallpaper and why it is considered "iconic".  This wallpaper is considered one of the most famous wallpapers in the world, it's formal name is Martinique but casually known as The Banana Leaf Wallpaper.

It was designed in 1941 and based on the tropical jungles of central America. In 1942 it was used in the refurbishment of the Beverly Hills Hotel (where it is still used).

This wallpaper has also been used extensively in Manhattan's Indochine restaurant.

Which provided the setting for a recent Vogue photoshoot.

Remember 'The Golden Girls'?  It was even featured in Blanches bedroom. (which makes me think of Bywater Boo's most recent post).

The Martinique is a classic and even now 70 years later it is still being printed and used in today's decor such as Nicky Hilton's LA home.

And, Brian Atwood's Milan apartment.

So the question is, is it right for the laundry room or will I feel like I'm washing clothes in a jungle?  Thoughts????

  1. The Martinique wallpaper is one of my all time fans! I'm so glad you found my blog! I will check the brand next time I'm at Walmart....cause that's where I bought the paint! I'm klassy! :-)

  2. I love this wallpaper. If your laundry room is really large, then go for it...otherwise, I would put it in an open room.

  3. I was thinking the same thing as MCHL. It seems the Martinique paper might need a lot of breathing room. Might feel a little claustrophobic in the laundry room. But I do love it, especially in Brian Atwood's apartment.

  4. It depends how old you are. For me, Ive seen it in the 70's and I don't really want to see it again. My daughter Bethany thinks it is fabulous! Thanks for stopping by to see us!

  6. I think in a small room, you would feel like Jane doing laundry in the jungle. Too big, too much.

  7. Thanks for the shout out!! As you know, I'm obsessed with the wallpaper too! I think the key with this wallpaper is to let the leaves flow over like an actual tree when it reaches the top of the wall. (notice some did that and some just continued the pattern to the ceiling) This kitchen, also in New Orleans is my favorite use of it : http://www.housebeautiful.com/decorating/change-it-feminine-1008#slide-5
Also, because we have banana leaf trees everywhere here so it makes sense. & it leads to a courtyard.
btw I'm dying over your laundry room!! WAY nicer than my entire kitchen! ha! -Boo

  8. I'm not too crazy for it. Maybe cause it reminds me of Blanche's bedroom...haha. I think it depends on how you use it.
