I WAS PICKED BY EMILY HENDERSON!

OK not me personally but my lucite bar stools were picked by Emily as one of her top 20 items she would save in a burning fire out of 550 entries!!  Honestly, I think I'm more excited that Emily Henderson actually knows I exist more than anything.  She may forget about me tomorrow, but she knows me today!!  Yes the design/girl crush continues.  Read all about it here.

A shout out to Charmaine (My Best Friend Craig) who's chairs were also picked.  LOVE THEM!

KELLY WEARSTLER AND VINTAGE LUCITE FLATWARE

I've decided that if Kelly Wearstler were my friend (and one day she will be :), she would be so happy with my most recent estate sale find.  A service for 8 Supreme Cutlery lucite and stainless flatware set made in Japan circa 1960s/70s (41 total pieces) in excellent condition. It truly is LUCITE GREATNESS.  I will be sad to see it go but that is the nature of the biz....sell or become a hoarder.

I think these would pair nicely with any of the Kelly Wearstler patterns for Pickard below.  Have I mentioned how crazy I am for KW?  If you haven't picked up her new book yet (Rhapsody), do so.  It is inspiration overload.

DOROTHY THORPE - LUCITE FLOOR LAMP

My other lamp score this weekend is a lucite floor lamp attributed to designer Dorothy Thorpe.  For those of you not familiar with this mid-century designer, I've supplied a little history below.
Mid Century Lucite and Brass Floor Lamp by Dorothy Thorpe
"Until the advent of the Mad Men television series, Dorothy Thorpe’s designs languished in relative obscurity, but once Don Draper began drinking out of her now famous roly poly glasses with the silver band rim, her mid-century creations skyrocketed to fame once again.
Dorothy Thorpe of Glendale, California was a world-renowned artist and designer who worked in many media, including glassware. Her career started during the depression days when she decided to make a tumbler from a beer bottle. She saw the sun shining through a beer bottle which had been placed on the window sill and decided to cut the neck off and decorate it with raffia. She gave one of her first creations to her brother who took it to MGM Studios where he worked. Clark Gable saw the glass and liked it so much that he ordered six dozen thereby launching Thorpe’s career.

In a few short years, Dorothy C. Thorpe became famous for her original creations in crystal ware. She had no formal design training, yet she did all her own sketches and drawings. She marketed her first pieces through a small Hollywood gift shop. Soon, buyers from the largest and best known shops saw her work and placed orders. Her list of customers included many of the Hollywood Studios and stars as well as wealthy and famous people, including Princess Grace of Monaco and the Shah of Iran. Besides tableware, Dorothy Thorpe created glass decorations and lamps for the Mormon Temple at Idaho Falls, windows for St. John’s Academy at Camarillo and pieces for several museums. She won many awards and was listed in Who’s Who in American Art. Dorothy Thorpe also created china, silver and linens and worked with plastics and resins.

In the middle of the 20th Century, Dorothy Thorpe began to experiment with lucite and began to add it to some of her regular pieces as well as creating new pieces. Among the most common are the “pretzel” silver band candle holders."
Here are some other examples of Dorothy Thorpe lucite greatness that I hope I can add to my collection some day:

Vintage Lucite Loveliness

I currently have two vintage lucite treasures in my home. I found a set of four lucite bar stools at Soho Retro in Birmingham, Alabama. Little did I know, they are the exact same style Jonathan Adler used in The Parker Palm Springs hotel with the backs removed. Based on 1stdibs, I got them for a steal but who can really compare anything to 1stdibs prices (do people really buy from them?? sometimes I wonder).

Here is a pic from 1stdibs. Mine are identical minus the unappealing chocolate fabric. Mine are covered in white vinyl like the Parker.

My second lucite lovely, is a gorgeous 1970s coffee table purchased at a local estate sale. This table screams Chateau À Gogo! It is currently in the sitting area of our bedroom. I'm going to show you a close-up because I'm still working on the space.

Bombshell Boudoir

My current project is the Master Bedroom. As you have seen from my previous post, I like a fun/casual atmosphere in most of my rooms. For the bedroom, I want to go a little more tranquil and sexy. My muse for this project is the one and only goddess of sultry sexiness: Bridgitte Bardo

Here are a few other visionary inspirations that I will pull from:

love the softness

love the layers and hits of gold

Love the industrial vibe of the lighting (chandelier and table) coupled with the muted tones

If you do not read this magazine...START.

My color palette will be a mix of ballet slipper pinks, soft grays, a hit of black and possibly one pop of color. I plan on keeping the walls a creamy white (such as Pocket Watch White by Ralph Lauren). The fabrics, lamps and furniture/accessories will be a perfect juxtaposition of clean lines and modern glamour.

For the bedding:
A classic white down comforter from Ralph Lauren Home. The Stella Quilt from West Elm in Oatmeal (pinky undertone). It has a subtle shimmer inspired by 1920s Fortuny pleated fabrics. Lucca Shams from Anthropologie in a soft washed velvet with pink/taupe stitching and Belle Epaque sheets in white (best sheets ever). White Flokati pillows coupled with a gold metallic leather and ponyhair bolster pillow (sounds uber cra-cra but trust me.......it works)

I will use these amazing Italian Murano glass lamps purchased at a local estate sale. They are also featured in the book Glamorous Rooms by Jan Showers. It's hard to see in the picture but the glass is full of controlled bubbles flecked with 24K gold dust.

Other items will include a black lacquer ornate mirror, new bedside tables (undetermined at this time).

Something I still need to figure out is overhead lighting. We currently have ceiling fans in both the sleeping area and sitting area. I CAN'T stand ceiling fans. They must come out and need to be replaced by a really cool overhead fixture (maybe like the one pictured in the inspiration photo above). Pass along any ideas.

Unfortunately you will not see the real life "reveal" for several weeks. We are lining up the painters now. As mentioned above, there is a seating area that is part of our bedroom. I will feature it's "vision" sometime later this week as to not make this post go on forever. Hope you enjoyed!
